The Weekend Review
The Premiership’s first week had its fair share of drama
Hello
Welcome to the first weekend review of the season. Usually this will come out on a Monday but since there was a game last night we’re here on Tuesday instead.
Yesterday I gave you a run through of what the season is going to look like at Row Z. I’m expecting an exciting season and I hope you enjoy my coverage. If you missed it yesterday you can catch it here:
Now on with the review and first up were the Friday night Tannadice lights as Dundee United welcomed The Rangers.
It was United who grabbed the first goal of the season thanks to Lachlan Rose. I don’t know what Crocker was up to with his Loki pronunciation. Maybe he’s right.
A scrappy goal as is so often the case but far from the scrappiest of the weekend (hello Lewis Mayo). The Rangers were no great shakes despite grabbing an equaliser. A lot of changes take a while to bed in and we’ll see that at a few clubs. Nice to see McInnes staying true to form by giving Findlay Curtis eight minutes at the end. Derek is under enormous pressure from minute one and it hasn’t taken long to show.
Personally I think he’s leaned far too far into the Rangers traditions and is making a rod for his own back.
Saturday afternoon saw the Paisley Saints visit Falkirk with expectations pretty damn low for the season ahead. Fuck that though as the Buddies were well worth a 2-0 win over a pretty lame home side. After Killian Phillips had given Saints the lead, the Bairns seemed to have levelled. That was until…..
Yeah, forget the IFAB instruction we’re still going all in on the handball minutiae.
Killian bagged himself a brace and his celebration for both goals had me thinking.
Tea time Saturday saw emotionally scarred for life Bloomhearts up in the North East to take on Stephen Robinson’s Brand New Dons.
It was low on quality. The Jambos led through a scrappy goal. Aberdeen equalised in the last minute when Lewis Mayo shoved the ball up his jumper and ran into the net. As if that wasn’t dramatic enough, in stoppage time:
The funny thing is I missed the second half to go to a surprise 25th wedding anniversary party. The upside was I was at a table of Jambos who were watching it on a phone. Needless to say, I had the last laugh.
The woe continues in Gorgie then. Both teams will take time to adjust to their new personnel.
Sunday afternoon saw a seven goal thriller. Unless you were Neil McCann who seeks his thrills elsewhere. Perth Saints emerged as 4-3 winners thanks to Kai Fotheringham.
This was followed by Leith v Motherwell. Can Leith continue their journey of mediocrity? Can Alfie Johansson pick up where JBA left off? The answer to both was a resounding yes. Ibrahim Said scored the goal of the weekend in the dying minutes to give Motherwell victory.
Leith can’t string two good halves together never mind matches.
The Champions finally got to unfurl the flag on Monday night. A dogged Dundee kept things tight against a Celtic team that carried on its “just enough” ways from last season. The enigma that is Benji Nygren grabbed the only goal.
So there you have it. Week one is in the bag. Unless you look at the Bloomhearts website.
Very good lads.
Hope you enjoyed that. Please do pass on your thoughts from the weekend.
