The Stickler #10
Podcasting, Aberdeen’s greatest strikers and the Premier League is back
Hello everyone
This newsletter is written with The Acolyte on in the background. I’m not invested in it but it’s Star Wars and that’s enough.
I’ll kick off with an apology for not having a midweek edition as other work got the better of me. Normal service is resumed today.
Ten issues in and I’m still playing about with lots of moving parts here. Trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t means there’s a lot of trial and error. For example, the power rankings seemed like a good idea at the time but I’m not sure they have much meaning. Also I don’t want to really turn this into a sports reporting newsletter with breakdowns of every game and news item. I figure you’re here because you like what I do so I should free myself up a bit more and not feel constrained by events of the week. That’s quite hard to do mentally but bear with me (or is it bare) as I figure it out as we go along.
My work relies on your support. If you like what I do and if you can, please consider becoming a paid subscriber. Thank you.

Aberdeen’s Greatest Strikers
As Bojan Miovski’s exit from Aberdeen was imminent I asked my Fitbatweets followers who are the best strikers they’ve seen live at Aberdeen. My top three was Duncan Shearer, Hans Gillhaus and Bojan. I got over 500 votes on this and collated them all to put together a top ten (which turns out being 11). The answers spread over 50 years which shows the variety in ages of the Dons faithful on Twitter and dispels any recency bias I think. The results were tighter than you would ever believe with the top two receiving the exact same number of votes:
Joe Harper (14% of votes)
Frank McDougall (14%)
Bojan Miovski (13%)
Hans Gillhaus (11%)
Duncan Shearer (9%)
Eric Black (8%)
Steve Archibald (6%)
Adam Rooney (6%)
Mark McGhee (6%)
Eoin Jess (2%)
Charlie Nicholas (2%)
21 other players received votes
I’ve put the leaders into a special portrait which is available on T-shirts, prints, mugs and coasters at the Fitbatweets shop (click here). I really like drawing throwback hairstyles and Charlie Nic and Stevie Archibald are prime examples. Bojan does not look out of place in this group does he.
The sporting weekend awaits
The Olympics might have gone but there’s still plenty coming up from Friday night and across the weekend. I’m looking forward to more NFL preseason action but the headlines will be closer to home.
Drum roll………………
