Well that’s that done for another four years. Did you enjoy this World Cup?
I thought it was okay, not as good as I hoped, I’m happy it’s over. The final was a throwback to 90 and 94 but no doubt the best team won. An early Spanish goal would have made a huge difference. As it was we had to wait 106 minutes for Ferran Torres to get the winner.
Sweet relief.
Obviously a tournament in the USA has to have vulgar excess. Nothing screamed that more than the half time show. All it was missing was Rio Ferdinand joining The Muppets. Wayne Rooney summed it up for us all.
Then at full time we had Gianni Infantino serenading us with his official World Cup anthem.
All good clean fun.
The other big event was The Open or as Sky Sports would have it The Rory McIlroy Open. I’d said before that this was one of my favourite sporting events of the year but I wasn’t feeling it this year. I think that’s partly down to the leaderboard never catching fire with many big names present. I watch a fair amount of golf but I hadn’t heard of Herbert, Suber, even Ryan Fox. There was one guy that you could hear but couldn’t see. Scotland’s own Bob MacIntyre flirted with the top ten now and again but faded in the end. As always he kept his temper in check.
He really needs to get himself a sports psychologist.
Lastly and some very sad news with the passing of Kevin Keegan. A genuine legend of the game.

My main gripe with The Open this year, apart from having to shell out a one-off £30 for a month of Sky Sports to have the privilege of listening to Nick Faldo, was that Sky once again spent so long trying to put the narrative in front of the sport. Spent days banging on about how much it would mean for Fleetwood to win for him, and them, and the fans, and people who don't even know golf exists, and then it didn't happen. Could have been showing some golf instead.
Belgian GP was also pump.
To be honest this was a below par World Cup. There were far too many countries in it, with the likelihood of more next time. The quality was more diluted than Tesco's orange. You want to see the very best, not Iraq & Jordan. Even the Euros has gone down this route sadly. I've had to recalibrate and will only join in when the knockout games begin. I make an exception for Scotland!
